The Changsha Economic and Technological Development Zone, located in the manufacturing corridor in eastern Changsha, was established in 1992 and was upgraded to Hunan's first economic and technological development zone at national level in 2000. With an actual usable area of approximately 71 square kilometers, the zone boasts one of the most opening up, highest development quality and efficiency, most innovative, and best business environment industrial parks and zones in Hunan and even the central regions of China. In September 2020, it became a veritable core area of the Hunan Pilot Free Trade Zone with an area of 47.17 square kilometers. It takes up nearly 40% of the provincial total of the pilot zone and 60% of the Changsha Area.
In recent years, the development zone has consistently followed the earnest instructions of President Xi Jinping, striving to achieve the blueprint outlined in the "Three Hubs and Four New Missions" Strategy. It has vigorously advanced the manufacturing sector with the responsibilities of main position, battlefield, and engine, accelerating the development of a global high-end equipment manufacturing base. The zone has comprehensively set up a modern industrial system and built itself into a "Five-good" industrial zone, promoting the high-quality development of the zone and high-end advancement of industries.
After more than 30 years of development, the zone has formed two major industrial clusters—construction machinery and rail transit, and automobiles and components—each worth over 100 billion yuan. Emerging and future industries such as next-generation information technology, biomanufacturing, artificial intelligence, low-altitude manufacturing, and hydrogen energy equipment are flourishing here. It has cultivated the Sany Group, China Railway Construction Heavy Industry Co., Ltd., Sunward Group, and other Top 50 global construction machinery companies; gathered SAIC Volkswagen, Changsha Xingchao Automobile Co., Ltd., GAC AION, BAIC Foton, Bosch Automotive, SEG Automotive, Continental, and other well-known automobile and parts companies; and, attracted leading enterprises in the new-generation information technology industry such as Lens Technology, Goke Microelectronics, and Megmeet.
